Bunnies Hop Past Chicks in Kill Scout Bout

by Phil Wrede

Saturday night at the War*House saw a spring-themed bout from the Rocky Mountain Roller Girls’ Kill Scouts as the Bunnies faced off against the Chicks. The Kill Scouts are up-and-coming RMRG skaters who haven’t yet been drafted to home teams; they all chose themed names for this bout. Things kicked off at 7:00 with Energizer wearing the star for the Bunnies, and Tom BroKAW jamming for the Chicks. Energizer drew first blood until a penalty pushed her off the track, but the Bunnies’ defense held the Chicks scoreless at the end of the first jam, 15-0.

Slappy Bird got a power jam for the Chicks next and burst through the pack as the whistle blew, but both teams traded jammer penalties over the next two minutes until the score stood Bunnies 24, Chicks 15. Captain Carrot made her first appearance jamming for the Bunnies and picked up 4 points to Peeps Show’s 1, and this wouldn’t be the last time we heard from either skater over the evening.

Penalties and stout defense held much of the scoring in check until about halfway through the first half, until Captain Carrot got a power jam and ripped off 14 points before calling it, followed by Leroy Jenkins scoring 22 of her own, making the score 90-34.

Chicks’ defense slowed down the Bunnies scoring for a time, but they couldn’t string together any big scoring runs of their own. With the assistance of some focused blocking from their teammates on the Bunnies, Leroy Jenkins and DodgeHer Rabbit scored over 25 more points as the half wound to a close, and the score at halftime was 130 Bunnies, 61 Chicks.

At the start of the second half, the Chicks looked like they were going to hold the Bunnies, but in the third jam, Captain Carrot put on the afterburners and scored 10 points; the scoreboard read 140-68.

After that, the Chicks started to mount a comeback, and their fans cheered ever louder as they closed the gap. On successive jams, Slappy Bird made the score 144-85, Chick Norris increased the Chicks’ score to 90, and Rodeo took advantage of back-to-back penalties on Bunnies’ jammer Bazooka Bunny, making things 150-106.

The Bunnies got things going again, thanks to Captain Carrot, who first scored 10 points, then three jams later another four when Thump Her cleared a hole through the Chicks’ line, and 27 more after just two more jams, to make the score 193-115. Just Leroy Jenkins played some jammer defense and got the Bunnies’ score to 206 against the Chicks’ 122 with 8:47 left.

The Bunnies stretched out their lead through the rest of the bout, each team scoring in fits and starts. The evening closed out with Watership Take Her Down jamming for the Bunnies against Elma Fudd for the Chicks. Watership fought hard against a determined Chicks defense until Elma took a penalty; Watership broke through for ten points. Time ticked away and the bout ended, 235 Bunnies, 135 Chicks. The Jammer MVPs were Slappy Bird for the Chicks, and Captain Carrot for the Bunnies; MVP Blockers were Mother Clucker (Chicks), and Bunnicula (Bunnies).
