Skater of the Month: Zoom

Rocky Mountain Rollergirls would like to introduce our current Skater of the Month and our February Valentine: Zoom Bayou!

A skater of a number of years, Zoom was snapped up during drafts by her home team the United States Pummeling Service. 2018 marks Zoom’s second year as captain of USPS, where she can consistently be seen displaying her skills as a calm and competent leader and strategist, and can routinely be found “delivering the mail,” to the opposing team. She is often described by her teammates as “the quintessential Pummeler,” with her low-key yet passionate demeanor and subtle good humor. Blocking, jamming, or pivoting, Zoom can do it all with the power and precision she is known league wide for.

An alumni of University of Colorado Denver, Zoom balances her skating, captaincy and committee works with her challenging career as a vision therapist here in Denver. She is happily married to her husband Brian, who can not only be seen cheering on his wife at bouts, but also sports a sweet tattoo of her in skates on his arm.

Zoom’s name has become synonymous with the quiet force she is on and off the track. She has played at every level RMRG has to offer with flying colors, and is currently tearing it up at the World Cup in Manchester England as part of Team Korea.

Also showcasing her considerable skills for organization and tactics, Zoom was warmly welcomed as the Head of Training this year for Rocky Mountain. She has already begun to make her mark by implementing new training programs and goals for the league. We are excited to see what this year will bring with Zoom at the helm!

Skater of the Month: Motorbutt

This month, the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls are excited to announce the first Skater of the Month for 2018: Motorbutt!

Motorbutt joined Rocky Mountain Rollergirls as a newbie skater in 2013 and made quick work of making a name for herself on the track. She trained hard and was skills-tested within a year, getting drafted to the Red Ridin’ Hoods and rostered for Project Mayhem games in 2014. In 2016, she became an integral part of the blocking core for The Contenders. Unfortunately, Motorbutt sustained an injury at the end of 2016, which also put her out for the majority of 2017. But, with the same tenacity we see in her on the track, Motorbutt tackled her injury and came back as if no time had passed. We’re excited to see what’s in store for her derby career in 2018!

And, if you think her “track record” is impressive, just take a look at what she does for the league off the track! Motorbutt has been a member of Rocky Mountain Rollergirls Board of Directors for the past 2 years, and is now beginning her 3rd year in that role. Last year, she took on the task on scheduling all league practices, which was quite the feat, coordinating with 4 different practice locations. She has also helped lead the charge in finding a new practice and bouting warehouse for Rocky Mountain Rollergirls, which we look forward to moving into at some point this year. Rocky Mountain Rollergirls are beyond lucky to have Motorbutt at one of our beloved leaders and teammates!

Skater of the Month: Carmen Slamdiego

This month RMRG would like to give a special shout out to our long time league member, Carmen Slamdiego (AKA Ho J. Simpson)!
Rocky Mountain Rollergirls team “The Sugar Kill Gang” are known for their sweetness. RMRG has one Sugar, Carmen Slamdiego (AKA Ho J. Simpson), who receives the award “Sweetest Sugar” consistently, and rightly so. Even after a long day of work, Carmen’s smile will shine brightly before and after practice.
Carmen joined RMRG 11 years ago in 2006, and Carmen’s natural speed set her apart as a gifted jammer. She expertly juked and sprinted around the track, skating with the top travel teams – Fight Club early in her derby career until 2010 and later the Contenders until 2013. During her time with RMRG, Carmen trained RMRG’s newest skaters. As an experienced teacher outside the derby world, Carmen used her teaching skills to help newbies increase in strength and skating skills on the track.  Currently, she works with RMRG Alumni Committee to ensure skaters that have left skating do not lose touch with RMRG.
With great sadness we announce Carmen, or Ho J as she will always affectionately be known, will hang up her skates in October after 11 years of skating.  Throughout those 11 years of skating she has touched many lives. We will miss her beyond what words can describe.
