The Windy City Rollers All-Stars (#9) beat Rocky Mountain’s 5280 Fight Club (#8) on Saturday May 10th at the Glitterdome as part of Thin Air Throw Down.  The teams previously faced off September of 2013 in Ashville, NC during WFTDA divisional playoffs with Fight Club winning by just 17 points.

Thin Air Throw Down, hosted by both Rocky Mountain Rollergirls and Denver Roller Dolls, included WFTDA sanctioned bouts between 5280 Fight Club, Denver Roller Dolls’ Mile High Club, Windy City Rollers All Stars, and the Gotham Girls Roller Derby All Stars.  Denver Roller Dolls’ B travel team, Bruising Altitude also got in on the action against Gotham’s Wall Street Traitors.

Although Sweet Mary Pain of Fight Club got a quick two points in the first jam, Windy City held Fight Club at two points the next four jams. A 12 point power jam by Alpha Q. Up helped set up Fight Club for contest. The score remained low and although Fight Club shared an even number of lead jammer statuses with their rivals, jammer penalties including many backblocks limited their scoring capabilities. Fight Club took the lead briefly with 9 minutes left in the first half. Windy City took the lead back in the very next jam, and tacked on a twenty point power jam before halftime. Phantom Menace lead Fight Club in points during the first half with 23, closely followed by Alpha Q. Up who scored 22. Windy City led 97-65 at halftime.

The second half began with Fight Club chipping away at Windy City’s lead, bringing the game to within eight points following a power jam by Sweet Mary Pain. However, Fight Club jammers were again consistently sent to the box and despite a tough Fight Club defense Windy City was able to break through on power jams securing them a win for the night with 195-154.
