Bridgetown Menaces Fight Club 147-239

By Phil Wrede

On Saturday, August 30, at Rocky Mountain Roller Hockey in Lakewood, Rocky Mountain Rollergirls’ 5280 Fight Club hosted the Portland men’s derby team, Bridgetown Menace. Bridgetown drew first blood in the opening jam, with Shreddy Mercury jamming for the Menace against Fight Club’s Sweet Mary Pain. The score after that first jam was Rocky Mountain 0, Bridgetown 11. Phantom Menace scored Fight Club’s first points of the day in the next jam, and their defense held Bridgetown scoreless, 4-11

In the third jam, Don Juan the DEVI-Skator lined up against She Who Must Not Be Named for the first of their many match-ups. He slipped through Fight Club’s blockers with She Who close behind, making things 4-15. Ivanna HasselHaus scored a grand slam and then some against Stairway to Kevin immediately after, and got Fight Club its first lead of the bout, the score 16-15.

Not too long after, the Devi-Skator and She Who faced off again, and the penalties didn’t shake out in Fight Club’s favor – She Who got called off the track, and the Devi-Skator did some one-footed skating, scoring twenty points to make things 16-41. Both teams flexed their tactical muscles, passing the star no less than four times between them, but it seemed as though the Menace could score two points for every one scored by Fight Club.

When She Who skated against Captain Obvious shortly thereafter, thanks to a pair of well-timed penalties, she was on a power jam for much of her time on the track. She ended the jam breaking through Bridgetown’s blocking on one foot herself, making the score 46-116. Fight Club wasn’t able to capitalize on She Who’s momentum, though, for the Menace held them scoreless for the last four minutes – Shreddy Mercury scored 13 for Bridgetown in the closing jam – and we went into halftime with the scoreboard reading Rocky Mountain 46, Bridgetown 146.

Fight Club came out of halftime with renewed focus, and in the third jam, the Menace started to crack. Captain Obvious got called off the track for two more penalties, and Sweet Mary Pain pressed the power jam, breaking through again and again, and passing the star off to Triple Shot Misto in the end, making the score 78-151.

Neither team would score points in one fell swoop like that through the rest of the bout; they’d chip away at one another five or six or seven points at a time (though Shreddy Mercury scored 15 on grand slams as the clock ticked down past the 10:00 mark), but Bridgetown had built themselves a lead too great to overcome. The last two jams found Fight Club with some power jam opportunities, and while they took advantage – Sweet Mary Pain scored 13 and She Who 12 – Bridgetown’s lead was just too great. The bout ended 147-239, with Tootsie Roller (RMRG) and Cosmo Damage (Bridgetown) getting the MVP blocker awards for their teams, and Sweet Mary Pain and Shreddy Mercury awarded MVP for their jamming.

The Rocky Mountain Rollergirls celebrated their 10 year anniversary on Saturday night as they wrapped up their 2014 home team season. All four teams took to the wood floor of the Fillmore Auditorium to battle for the season’s final placings.

The night opened with a bang for the Sugar Kill Gang as Fiona Grapple took the star, got lead, and jumped the apex on her way to a 4-0 start to the game. Gator Dunn gave the Hoods lead in the second jam, but was forced to call it off immediately due to a damaged skate. The Sugars lead 7-3 after three jams, but that was the last they’d see of the lead for the rest of the night. Jam #4 saw She Who Cannot Be Named give the Hoods a 12-7 lead and they never looked back. By halftime, they held a 90-55 advantage thanks to scoring leaders She Who (27 points) and ShredHer Wheats (26).

The Sugars came out strong in the second half, cutting the deficit from 35 points down to just 17 after two jams. The Hoods’ lead remained within reach until ShredHer Wheats put up a 33-0 score in the seventh jam of the half, stretching the lead to 139-81. Despite 18-3 and 22-3 jam wins by all-stars Toxic Taunic and Gaygan, respectively, the Sugars were never able to get within serious striking distance after that.

The final jam of the night was bittersweet for the Hoods as they gave the star to former Rocky Mountain Rollerpunk Hole Punch of Pain. Punches won the jam 4-3, giving the Hoods a 201-163 victory, but now leaves Rocky Mountain to start college out of state. The Red Ridin’ Hoods finished 2014 in third place at 1-2 while the Sugars fell to 0-3 for the year.

MVPs for the first game went to Fiona Grapple (SKG Blocker), Queen Elizabitch (SKG Jammer), Helen Wheels (Hoods Blocker), and She Who Cannot Be Named (Hoods Jammer).

The next game was the showdown for the Rocky Mountain home team championship and followed a pattern similar to the first. Dooms Daisies jammer Ivanna HasselHaus gave her team a 9-0 lead after the first frame and the Daises were able to hold that lead until the 11th jam of the game. After scoring only 20 points in the first ten jams, the United States Pummeling Service gave the star to standout blocker Tootsie Roller who put up a 19-0 to give USPS a 39-25 lead. Like the Hoods in the previous game, once they got the lead, the team in navy never gave it up. Four more double-digit jams (all by different jammers) gave USPS a commanding 115-53 halftime lead.

The Pummelers didn’t let their 62-point halftime lead slow them down in the early going of the second half. After eight jams of the final period, they had stretched their lead to 84 points despite using seven different jammers. Sweet Mary Pain ensured that the USPS lead wouldn’t extend into triple digits by putting up a powerful 27-0 jam at that point, but the momentum swing didn’t last beyond that jam. Despite a 27-2 win by Sissy Rinkshaw in the final jam, the Daisies came up 40 points short, 213-173. The loss put the Dooms Daisies at 2-1 for the year while the United States Pummeling Service wrapped up a perfect 3-0 season.

MVPs for the second game went to Tootsie Roller (USPS Blocker), Lezzie Borden (USPS Jammer), Bones Patrol (Daisies Blocker), and Ivanna HassselHaus (Daisies Jammer).

Rocky Mountain Tramples Tampa

Last Saturday evening, the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls defeated Tampa Roller Derby’s travel teams at Rocky Mountain Roller Hockey in Lakewood.

Fight Club vs Tantrums

Rocky Mountain’s 5280 Fight Club (WFTDA #9) took on the Tampa Tantrums (WFTDA #24) on the track where Sweet Mary Pain nabbed the first point of the night on the way to a dominating Fight Club win and Sweet Mary Pain’s own MVP jammer trophy. Points racked up quickly for Fight Club who scored multiple grand slams throughout the night. A combination of jammers quickly punching through the Tantrum’s walls while Fight Club’s walls lead by MVP blocker May Q. Pay and Triple Shot Misto effectively bridged before knocking Tantrum jammers out of bounds and recycling them maximum distance. At the half Fight Club lead Tampa 138-48.

The second half started with a Fight Club power jam and a power line up. Fight Club held the Tantrums at 53 points for 7 jams, continuing to employ the strategies which put them ahead in the first half. Sweet Mary Pain pulled in 83 points for the game leading in scoring for a 281-83 final score.

Contenders vs Bruise Crew

Rocky Mountain’s Contenders and Tampa’s Bruise Crew played next. Jammer Gator Dunn scored 18 points in the first jam. Contenders followed suit of that first jam, and of the first game, scoring heavy with grand slams.  Contenders’ jammer rotation saw some new faces near the end of the half, which concluded with 179-25.

The second half continued with a very broad jammer rotation for Contenders with 10 different jammers. Despite the change, Bruise Crew continued to have trouble breaking through the Contenders’ defense, allowing Contenders’ jammers to dominate lead jammer position. Ivanna Hasselhaus was awarded MVP jammer for Contenders and Bones Patrol MVP blocker. The final score was 279-72.
